A Lifetime of Love: The Story Behind Playful Pups Retreat

laurie and baby shebaFrom as far back as I can remember, dogs have been an inseparable part of my life. My first dog, a sweet dachshund named Cinnamon, joined our family when I was just five years old. Later, when I was a teenager, a spirited Miniature Schnauzer named Gretchen became my closest companion. Looking back now, I realize these two pups were the beginning of something truly beautiful—an enduring passion that would grow into a lifelong calling.

Growing up, life at home wasn’t always easy. I was an only child in a tumultuous household, and the constant conflict often left me searching for peace and comfort. I still remember retreating to a closet, holding Gretchen close as she curled up beside me. In those quiet moments, she became more than a pet—she was my confidant, my safe place, and my most loyal friend.

As I grew older, my love for dogs only deepened. Their loyalty, joy, and unconditional love offered me what I rarely found elsewhere. Being in their company was not just a comfort—it was home. Eventually, I married my husband, Dan, and at one point, our home was filled with the varying personalities of 11 beloved dogs. Today, our household is slightly smaller, with six dogs of our own and a rotation of foster pups who stay with us until they find their forever families.

laurie and dan xmasOut of this deep love, Playful Pups Retreat was born. Over the past 15 years, we have had the privilege of caring for thousands of dogs, each one a unique soul who has taught us something new about loyalty, joy, and compassion. We’ve laughed, loved, and sometimes grieved alongside pet parents as we’ve said goodbye to beloved companions who crossed the rainbow bridge. Through it all, we have gained not only expertise in the pet care industry but also countless memories that continue to fuel our mission.

That mission also extends beyond our resort. With the creation of my non-profit, Pitties Love Peace in 2011, we’ve been able to provide hope and healing to hundreds of dogs in need each year—from fragile puppies, to wise seniors, and many requiring medical rehabilitation. None of this would be possible without the dedication of our incredible volunteers and the unwavering support of our community.

For me, dogs have been the greatest source of love and happiness in my life. They’ve been worth every dollar spent on surgeries and care, every tear shed when saying goodbye, and every moment of joy that fills my heart when I look into their eyes. They are, without a doubt, the greatest investment in happiness I have ever made.

At Playful Pups Retreat, our story isn’t just about a business—it’s about love, loyalty, and the incredible bond between people and their dogs. It’s a story that started with Cinnamon and Gretchen and continues today with every furry guest that comes through our doors.
