Whether your furry pal is shedding extra due to changes with the weather or they shed excessively all year round, when you have a dog, you likely get overwhelmed trying to keep the house clean. If you are like many pet parents we see at Playful Pups Retreat, you probably keep a lint roller handy, maybe even have an extra one in your car!

As a busy dog mom with 7 dogs in my house, I am excited to share 3 fur-tastic tips to cut down on your pup’s seasonal shedding.

  1. Regular Brushing Sessions: One of the most effective ways to reduce shedding is through regular brushing. This helps remove loose fur before it ends up all over your floors and furniture. Invest in a high-quality brush suited for your dog’s coat type, whether it’s short, long, or curly. Depending on their coat type, brush your dog at least two or three times a week, if not daily, to keep shedding under control. Not only does brushing reduce shedding, but it also promotes healthy skin and coat by distributing natural oils. Bonus Tip: I like to brush my dogs outside on the porch to keep the fur out of the house, and this is also a great way to enjoy the sunshine too!
  2. Regular Baths: Giving your dog regular baths can help loosen and remove dead fur, reducing the amount of hair they shed inside the house. Use a mild dog shampoo formulated for your pet’s skin type, and be sure to rinse thoroughly to prevent any residue that could irritate their skin. However, be cautious not to over-bathe your dog, as it can strip away natural oils and lead to dry, flaky skin, potentially exacerbating shedding. Aim for a bathing schedule that strikes a balance between cleanliness and maintaining your dog’s skin health.
  3. Balanced Diet: A well-balanced diet plays a crucial role in your dog’s overall health, including the condition of their coat. Ensure your furry companion is getting proper nutrition with a diet rich in essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, found in sources like fish oil and flaxseed, can help maintain healthy skin and reduce excessive shedding.
